A semitrailer is shown after an accident in the center median of Interstate 15 in Mesquite, Tuesday, May 12, 2015.

A semitrailer and a car crashed on southbound Interstate 15 this evening in Mesquite, sending one man to the hospital, according to Mesquite Fire & Rescue.

Emergency crews were called about 5:10 p.m. to the scene after the two vehicles collided, causing the semi to end up on its side in the center median, the fire department said.

The man driving the semi was taken to Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite to undergo evaluation, and the woman driving the car was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and declined to be taken to the hospital, the department said.

"We are really fortunate that no one was seriously injured," Fire Chief Kash Christopher said in a statement.

Witnesses told officials the semi tried to avoid the car, which was stopped on the road, and swerved into the center median, fire officials said.

The truck and trailer of the semi sustained heavy damage, the department said.

Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
