People wait to be called to a counter Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at the Department of Motor Vehicles office on East Sahara Avenue.

CARSON CITY — Nearly 60 new workers would be hired by the state Department of Motor Vehicles to alleviate long lines and wait times under a plan approved today by Nevada Senate and Assembly budget committees.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has recommended the agency hire 54 new technicians and five supervisors at four offices in Clark County and one in Washoe County.

Assembly Minority Leader Marilyn Kirkpatrick, D-North Las Vegas, said people are standing in line out the doors at DMV offices in Southern Nevada. Employees are working overtime, but there are still waits of up to several hours.

“We need to get bodies behind the desks,” Kirkpatrick said.

Members of the Senate Finance Committee and Assembly Ways and Means Committee unanimously approved funding for the extra employees.

The committees also approved a $1 fee on every DMV transaction to help pay for a new $109 million computer system. The agency conducts about 6.4 million transactions a year.
