Nevada gasoline prices continue upward creep

Gasoline prices continue to rise in Nevada, with drivers paying an average of 44 cents more a gallon compared to a month ago, according to the AAA auto club.

The state’s average price per gallon was $3.22 per gallon Tuesday, up more than 3 cents from a week ago. At this time last year, the average cost of a gallon of gas in Nevada was about $3.80.

The average price of gas in Las Vegas is on par with the statewide average but 46 cents higher than the same time last month, according to the AAA’s monthly fuel price report.

The cost of gas in North Las Vegas rose to $3.19 per gallon, a 44-cent increase from the middle of April, while Henderson averaged $3.22 a gallon, up 45 cents from the previous month.

AAA attributed the rising prices in the West to ongoing regional refinery issues but said prices are expected to remain stable for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

“Nationally, AAA predicts that gas prices may not change significantly by the holiday weekend,” AAA Nevada spokesperson Cynthia Harris said in a statement. “This relatively stable price would result in the cheapest gas prices for Memorial Day travelers in at least five years.”

Nationally, fuel prices are at their highest average of the year at $2.66 a gallon, up 27 cents from April and 4 cents from last week. That is still about $1 less than a year ago and the lowest since 2009.

Nevada has the third highest average price for gas in the country. California leads with an average of $3.73 a gallon, followed by Hawaii at $3.23.

In Nevada, prices are highest in Reno, where regular gasoline costs an average of $3.37 a gallon, and lowest in Elko, where drivers pay an average of $3.07 a gallon. Those prices were up 46 cents and 36 cents, respectively, from the month before.
