Police go after distracted drivers in North Las Vegas

North Las Vegas Police issued more than 450 citations during a two-week campaign targeting distracted drivers, officials said.

Officers conducted saturation patrols from March 28 to April 13 on thoroughfares with heavy traffic and other high-crash locations, police said.

Officers made 414 traffic stops, issued 153 warnings and 477 citations. Of the citations, 78 were for operating handheld devices while driving and 119 were for speeding. Some drivers were cited for speeding and distracted driving, officials said.

The patrols were part of a program to reduce deaths and injuries on Nevada roads through enforcement and education.

The North Las Vegas Police Department received $168,000 in federal funding via the Nevada Department of Public Safety — Office of Traffic Safety for the 2015 Joining Forces program. Enforcement events during the year will focus on pedestrian safety, seat belt use, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving.
