Police: Wrong-way driver in stolen car hits construction workers

Two construction workers were seriously injured this morning when a drunk, wrong-way driver in a stolen car failed to stop at an intersection and hit them, according to Metro Police.

A 2000 Honda Civic was driving south in the northbound lanes of Eastern Avenue about 3:40 a.m. when a Metro officer tried to pull the car over near Valley Street, police said.

The driver of the Civic refused to stop, continued into the intersection of Eastern and Charleston Boulevard and hit three workers, police said. Two workers were forced to the ground, and the Civic crashed into a construction truck behind them, police said.

Louis Mercado, 25, of Las Vegas, and Joel Murphy, 29, of Las Vegas, were taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. The third worker, who was not injured, is Mario Fernandez, 41, of Las Vegas.

Police identified the driver as Jeanne Anguiano, 40, of Las Vegas.

She was taken to UMC with serious injuries and was booked in absentia on counts of DUI and possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.

The construction crew was doing work for the Las Vegas Valley Water District. Charleston was reduced to one lane in each direction, and the southbound lanes of Eastern were closed at Fremont Street, just south of the accident.
