Minorities commit most murders in New York City

I just finished reading Eugene Robinson’s article “We find trouble when we go looking for it.” Robinson seems to leave out some factual analysis.

Robinson says that 85 percent of stops in New York City under the stop and frisk policy were blacks and Hispanics. The fact is 95 percent of murders in New York City are committed by people of color. He says blacks and whites smoke pot at equal rates. That may be true, but people aren’t put in jail for smoking pot; they are put into jail for selling it. Robinson also said Freddie Gray was no menace to society and that maybe some intervention would have gotten his life on track. What do you call being arrested 20 times, some for selling heroin, if it isn’t intervention? New Attorney General Loretta Lynch was asked by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to investigate the Baltimore police department. Maybe it’s time to investigate what local Baltimore politicians did with the $500 million they received for education from the stimulus, especially after Rep. Donna Edwards said school children in that ZIP code were using 20-year-old school books!
