Committee OKs funding for building at UNLV, replacing DMV office

CARSON CITY — A joint budget subcommittee today approved a state construction program of more than $234 million that includes funding for a new hotel college building at UNLV and replacing the main office of the Department of Motor Vehicles in Las Vegas.

The subcommittee deadlocked on spending $858,539 for a new execution chamber at the state prison in Ely. That issue should be resolved Wednesday when the full Senate Finance Committee and Assembly Ways and Means Committee meet.

The new building at UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration is expected to cost $49 million, with half the money coming from the state and the other half from private donations. At last count, about $14 million in donations had been secured.

The subcommittee decided the state Public Works Board should manage the construction; UNLV wanted to oversee the project.

The DMV building on East Sahara Avenue would be demolished and replaced with a 38,500-square-foot facility at an estimated cost of $22.9 million. It will be financed by bonds, with highway funds and pollution-control fees paying off the bonds.
