Legislature approves bill to preserve historic Nevada State Prison

CARSON CITY — A bill to preserve the historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City and turn it into a tourist attraction is on its way to Gov. Brian Sandoval.

The Senate on Sunday approved AB377 to preserve the prison “as a historical, cultural, educational and scientific resource.” The bill sets up an account to accept donations, grants and other sources of revenue.

The prison was opened in 1862 and was one of the oldest operating penitentiaries until its closure in 2012. It is the site of Nevada’s last execution in 2006. The prison permitted gambling at one time.
