Man arrested in fatal stabbing in southwest valley

A man with a history of mental illness was arrested in the stabbing death of a woman found outside her southwest valley home earlier this month.

Julio Cesar Angulo, 24, of Inglewood, Calif., was arrested Sunday and booked into the Clark County Detention Center and is facing a murder charge in the death of his uncle's wife, Norma Chavez, 47.

According to a police report:

On May 2, Metro Police responded at about 1 p.m. to the 3900 block of Calle Del Sol, near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard. Jesus Chavez reported that he had been beaten unconscious, and when he woke up he located his aunt, Chavez, with stab wounds.

She was stabbed in the neck, police said.

Jesus Chavez, who was living with his aunt at the time of the incident, told police Angulo showed up unannounced to watch the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight. The three sat on the patio and "everything seemed fine," according to the report.

Jesus Chavez heard his aunt call his name and when he turned around, Angulo punched and kicked him in the face until he was unconscious.

Based on video surveillance and a cashier's testimony, Angulo entered a nearby convenience store with possible injuries to his face after the killing.

Angulo, who has a history of schizophrenia, had threatened to kill his mom several times in California and was often hospitalized for mental evaluation, according to the report. His mom had a restraining order against him.

Angulo was arrested Sunday and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
