Nevada Senate passes experimental-drug bill

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Senate voted 20-0 today for a bill giving terminally ill patients the option of trying experimental drugs to prolong their lives or possibly cure them.

The bill gives a patient the right to take drugs only partially approved by the Federal Drug Administration.

The patient must be judged to be within a year of his or her death. The experimental drug also must have passed the first phase of testing by the FDA to make sure it will not cause harm.

The bill now goes to Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Fifteen states have approved similar measures.
