Police: Medical episode might have caused fatal Boulder Highway crash

Updated Wednesday, May 20, 2015 | 8:20 p.m.

Boulder Highway was partially closed at Russell Road today after a two-car crash that may have been caused by a medical episode, Metro Police said.

A man was transported to St. Rose Dominican Hospitals-Rose de Lima Campus after going into cardiac arrest, which could have caused the wreck, Officer Larry Hadfield said.

Evidence at the scene indicated that a 2013 Acura was stopped at a red light in the right lane of a two-lane left turn lane on southbound Boulder Highway at Russell. A 2014 Ford Flex was traveling north on Boulder Highway in the left lane of the turn lane and was approaching the red light. A 2013 Ford F-150 was traveling south on Boulder Highway and hit the rear of the Acura. The Ford then continued southeast across the intersection and sideswiped the left side of the Ford Flex, coming to a rest on the east side of Boulder Highway.

The operator of the F-150 was pronounced dead at the hospital. The passenger of the Ford Flex was transported to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

Northbound Boulder Highway remained closed for over three hours as officers investigated. The accident was reported about 1 p.m., Hadfield said.

Metro's fatal-accident detail is investigating, police said.
