CARSON CITY — Customers could soon be seeing a $1 fee at the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles as the agency raises money for a new computer system.
The Senate Finance Committee voted Monday to approve SB502, which authorizes a $1 technology fee on any paid transaction at the DMV. The provision would expire in 2020.
The money is aimed at funding a $109 million, multi-year DMV modernization project that the agency said will cut wait times, maintain data security and reduce the need to come into a physical DMV office.
Most of the funding for the upgrade is expected to come from the highway fund, while the $1 technology fee is projected to raise $10 million over the next two years.
