Committee approves new home for Supreme Court in Las Vegas

CARSON CITY — The Assembly Ways and Means Committee approved a plan to find the Nevada Supreme Court a new home in Las Vegas today.

More than 60 percent of appeals to the court come from Las Vegas and justices want to be able to hold oral arguments in Southern Nevada.

Chief Justice James Hardesty told the committee that an unidentified developer wants to construct a two-story building to lease to the court and the new Court of Appeals.

The court, whose official location is in Carson City, now rents space from Clark County at the regional justice center with the lease set to expire in 2025. Hardesty said moving to the new structure would save $500,000 over the next 20 years.

The court now leases 15,200 square feet from Clark County. The new building would provide 24,000 square feet. The new courthouse would be adjacent to the federal court building.

Hardesty said Clark County has agreed to end the lease at the regional center early in December 2016 when the new structure is available.

A majority of the seven justices are from Clark County.

The committee vote was unanimous.
