Lawmakers to review abortion parental notification bill

CARSON CITY — Nevada lawmakers are expected to review a hot-button measure that would require doctors to notify a girl's parents before performing an abortion on a minor.

Senators are scheduled to review AB405 on Monday in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.

The bill would require physicians to send a written notification to parents or guardians of a minor seeking an abortion and requires a 48-hour wait time before the procedure. Girls could seek an exception through the courts.

Democrats opposed the measure, saying it could drive girls to desperate lengths to hide their abortion.

The measure passed out of the Assembly on a 24-17 vote in April and lay dormant in the Senate until being referred out of a finance committee last week.
