1 killed, 3 hurt in head-on crash during passing attempt

One person was killed and three seriously injured when a Toyota Corolla attempting to pass a tractor-trailer crashed head-on into another car on U.S. 95 in Nye County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened about noon Monday when the Corolla, headed north, pulled into the southbound lane to pass the truck and collided with a Mini Cooper, officials said. The Toyota, which spun around and also hit the truck, was in a passing zone, officials said.

The front passenger of the Toyota, Adam Al-Nuaimi, 21, of Reno, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

A 20-year-old man driving the Toyota, also from Reno, and an 82-year-old man driving the Mini and a 74-year-old woman in the Mini, both from Sparks, were taken by air ambulance to University Medical Center in Las Vegas in serious condition, officials said.

The driver of the truck, a 52-year-old man from Chico, Calif., was not injured.
