Taxable sales up 2.6 percent in March

Bars and restaurants in Nevada had a bad month in March and the state’s taxable sales rose only 2.6 percent, the smallest increase since 2004.

The state Department of Taxation reported Tuesday that taxable sales reached $4.5 billion, with car sales up 10.3 percent and building supplies rising 15.5 percent.

But statewide food service and drinking places were down 0.6 percent.

The increase was the lowest gain statewide since 1.7 percent in December 2004.

The department said Clark County saw a gain in sales of building materials at 15.3 percent; 8.9 percent in auto sales and 2.6 percent in the furniture business. Bar and restaurant sales in the Las Vegas area was down 1.4 percent.

The biggest drop in taxable sales statewide was 15.5 percent in Humboldt County.
