Governor signs experimental-drug bill, scores of others

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed bills to accelerate movement toward a high-speed train between Southern California and Las Vegas and to give hope to terminally ill patients.

The governor announced today that he has signed an additional 75 bills.

SB 457 creates the Nevada High Speed Rail Authority with five members to be appointed by the governor. By Oct. 1, the new authority must select a company to move forward with the high-speed rail project.

The bill says the train must have a speed of at least 150 mph on trips between Victorville, Calif., and Las Vegas.

Another bill, AB 164, is called the “right to try” bill and allows those who have been diagnosed with less than a year to live to try experimental drugs not fully approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Supporters said full FDA testing can take more than 10 years.

Assembly Bill 107 requires the state Department of Education to gather and assess information on the impact of poverty and nutrition on the academic achievement of students.
