Five people in a cab were injured Wednesday night when they collided head-on with a tractor-trailer driven by a Las Vegas man suspected of driving under the influence, Metro Police said.

The crash happened about 9:05 p.m. on Dean Martin, south of Hotel Rio Drive, police said.

The truck, pulling a flatbed trailer, was south on Dean Martin when it entered a two-way turn lane heading toward the northbound travel lanes, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle, a Union Cab minivan, said he saw the truck drifting into his lanes and swerved to avoid crashing, but the vehicles collided head-on, police said. A witness reported seeing the truck swerving in traffic before the crash, police said.

The truck driver fled on foot, but witnesses followed him and led police to the man, who was taken into custody, police said.

The truck driver, Bernard Tropp, 44, of Las Vegas, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run, police said. He suffered minor injuries, police said.

The cab driver also suffered minor injuries, but four Canadian passengers suffered from moderate to critical injuries, police said. They were taken to University Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
