Metro Police are asking for the public’s help finding a suspect in a deadly shooting Friday night on Fremont Street.

After receiving reports that a man had been shot, patrol officers responded at 11:48 p.m. to the 2900 block of Fremont Street, near East Oakey Boulevard, where they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim, Richard Najera, was transported to University Medical Center, where he died, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Najera was walking on the sidewalk when a tan Honda Accord north on Fremont Street came upon him, according to a police report.

One of the car’s five passengers called Najera a hater before multiple people got out of the car and attacked him, police said. One of the people shot Najera before getting back in the car and fleeing, police said.

An officer in the area recognized a tan Honda Accord from a radio broadcast and, after running the car’s license plate, began following it, police said.

The Honda turned off its headlights and turned into a residential street, police said. By the time the officer caught up to the car, which was stopped in the 3100 block of Scarlet Oak Avenue, it was empty, police said.

Officers searched the area and found Yors Garcia-Mier, 18, hiding in the front yard of a home, police said.

He said he was the driver and told police he ran from the scene because he didn’t have a driver’s license, according to police. He denied any involvement in the incident, police said.

Detectives arrested Garcia-Mier on a count of murder, and he was booked at the Clark County Detention Center, police said.

Homicide detectives were asking for the public’s assistance identifying another man they initially said they believed was linked to the slaying.

On Thursday, however, police said detectives were no longer asking for the public's assistance locating "the person of interest" and that no further arrests had been made.
