Today’s high temperature breaks record, but much cooler weather coming

Updated Monday, Nov. 2, 2015 | 5:45 p.m.

Today could be the last 80-degree day of the year in Las Vegas, as a cold front is expected to drop the high temperature by more than 20 degrees on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s high of 86 degrees breaks the previous record high for this date of 84 degrees in 1937, the year records began.

But Tuesday’s high is only expected to reach a brisk 62 degrees, meteorologist Nathan Foster said. There is also a 20 percent chance of rain Tuesday for most of the valley, with a 40 percent chance in and around the Spring Mountains.

Temperatures will stay in the low 60s through Thursday, then climb back to the low 70s for the weekend, meteorologist Andy Gorelow said

A wind advisory is also in effect in the valley until 10 p.m. today, with winds of more than 40 mph forecast. Winds of up to 50 mph are possible in the Spring Mountains, where a wind advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Meteorologists are predicting about an inch of snowfall as low as 6,500 feet tonight on Mount Charleston and as low as 5,500 feet Tuesday and Wednesday, Foster said.

The Sierra’s first winter storm of the season, meanwhile, is making for difficult travel on snowy mountain highways and dumping rain across most of Northern Nevada. Chains or snow tires are required on most mountain highways around Lake Tahoe.

Three to four inches of snow was reported this morning at the Mount Rose Ski Resort near Reno and more than a foot was expected above 8,500 feet before the storm is expected to move off to the north and east by Tuesday morning.

NV Energy reported power outages affecting more than 3,000 customers at Incline Village and about 1,500 in the Washoe Valley south of Reno.

Stormy conditions were blamed for a three-car crash that temporarily closed the Mount Rose Highway in both directions Sunday night.
