Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley has won the support of former Las Vegas Mayor and mob lawyer Oscar Goodman.

O’Malley, the former Maryland governor and Baltimore mayor who’s polling in the single digits, met Goodman at a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting, and they have maintained a friendship over the years.

Goodman, a registered Independent, said O’Malley is a very “accomplished progressive.”

“He’s the kind of guy I would like to see lead this country,” he said.

O’Malley has made multiple trips to Las Vegas since announcing his presidential bid this summer. He’s been catering to unions and calling for stronger gun control.

Despite a strong performance at the first Democratic debate in October, O’Malley has picked up little ground on front-runner Hillary Clinton and top contender Bernie Sanders.

But Goodman said he has hope for O’Malley.

“In my law practice, I always represented the underdog,” he said. “At the end of the day, I didn’t do too badly.”
