The Rematches

Las Vegas Sun sports editors Ray Brewer and Case Keefer focus much of their weekly high school football discussion on a pair of high school football rematches in the playoffs — Desert Pines at Moapa Valley and Legacy at Centennial.

Madison Washington, a senior on the Bishop Gorman High girls basketball team, knew she had found her college home when she arrived at Oregon State’s practice.

“Right off the bat, the girls were nice,” she said. “They came over and introduced themselves. Being kind like that is a big thing for me.”

The 6-foot-2 forward, who is considered a top-1oo recruiting nationally by ESPN.com, verbally committed Tuesday night to Oregon State. The final four schools she considered also include South Carolina, Gonzaga and Washington.

Washington will be a four-year varsity player this season, averaging 12 points and nine rebounds per game as a junior.

Washington is the third Gorman player from the class of 2016 to commit, joining Megan Jacobs (Utah) and Raychel Stanley (Loyola-Marymount). While the group has produced successful seasons at Gorman, they’ve come up short in the state tournament. This season, nemesis Centennial again has a roster of talented players.

It’s the type of competition that will help Washington in the transition from high school to college.

“Those games (against Centennial) make you mentally tough,” she said. “Everyone is giving it their all. Everybody’s body hurts. It’s who wants it more.”

Other players who are committed locally include Liberty’s Taylor Turney (San Jose State) and Centennial’s Bailey Thomas (West Virginia).

The early college signing period begins Nov. 11.
