Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, in Washington.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a leading advocate for reducing carbon emissions, praised President Barack Obama for stopping a Canadian oil company from building a pipeline across the U.S.

The Keystone XL pipeline, which would have moved at least 800,000 barrels of tar sands oil daily from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast, has become symbolic in the ongoing debate over the relationship between carbon emissions and climate change.

“It would harm our environment while doing nothing to promote energy independence,” said Reid, an outspoken opponent of the pipeline.

“The country should instead work to promote clean, renewable energy projects with jobs that cannot be outsourced to foreign special interests,” he said.
