No special session for Faraday in November, say legislative leaders

Legislative leaders said they doubted there would be a special session in the coming weeks to craft a deal to lure electric car startup Faraday Future to North Las Vegas.

“There’s not going to be one in November,” said Assemblyman Jim Wheeler, the GOP’s majority whip, echoing what a number of lawmakers said Friday.

“I have heard rumors. And that’s all they are,” said Republican Assemblyman Glenn Trowbridge.

“It’s not soup yet,” said Democratic state Sen. David Parks

Politicians have been talking about the possibility of returning to Carson City since the summer as Gov. Brian Sandoval and North Las Vegas have been in talks with electric car startup Faraday, which is considering locating its factory there. A special session, were it to take place, would have to be called by the governor.

The company, which launched last year, has 400 employees and is promising a $1 billion investment.

Nevada is competing with Georgia, California and Louisiana for the company’s factory, the location of which it has said it will announce within weeks. Potential legislation could resemble a Tesla’s package of tax incentives. North Las Vegas’ Apex Industrial Park, which hosts 18,000 developable acres, currently lacks water and other utility infrastructure necessary for a large-scale electric car factory.

Las Vegas Assemblyman Erven Nelson downplayed the likelihood of such a deal being presented. “I heard July. I heard October. Those didn’t happen. I heard November. That looks like it’s not going to happen. I heard it may be in December,” he said. “I don’t think anyone knows.”
