State awards $560 million contract in Project NEON highway widening

CARSON CITY — Transportation officials have awarded the largest construction job in Nevada's history to widen the state's busiest stretch of highway.

The Nevada Department of Transportation board voted Monday to award a $560 million contract to Omaha-based Kiewit Corporation. The company plans to complete Project NEON, which will widen 3.7 miles of Interstate 15 in Las Vegas that leads up to the "Spaghetti Bowl" interchange.

The project is expected to wrap up in late 2019 and is expected to reduce travel delays by 28 percent. Transportation officials calculate that it will save $110 million annually by increasing productivity, and say it will help the environment by reducing the time vehicles spend idling.

Project NEON is also expected to create more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs.
