Court suspends law license of former Nevada U.S. attorney

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has suspended for a year the law license of Lawrence J. Semenza, who once served as U.S. attorney for Nevada.

Semenza of Las Vegas was sentenced to 18 months in prison in January for failing to pay $290,000 in federal taxes from 2006 to 2010. He pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges of willful failure to file a tax return, according to court records.

The court released its decision on Thursday.

Semenza served as U.S. attorney for Nevada from 1975 to 1977 and then entered private practice.

Prosecutors said Semenza had personal and corporate income of more than $1 million during the years in question.

Semenza would have to apply to have his law license reinstated after the suspension.
