This weekend we celebrate Jeff Gordon’s contributions to NASCAR as the four-time champion’s final race is Sunday at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

We remember that brash 20-year-old kid with a bad mustache who burst onto the circuit full of confidence and with the driving skills to back it up. We remember his victories, those 93 career wins, including three at Daytona, and his dedication to the sport in starting 795 races to finish his career. In Las Vegas, Gordon had six top-5 finishes and won here in 2001.

The 44-year-old Gordon wants to give us one last memory. He’s one of four drivers in contention to win the Sprint Cup, and some feel his experience could give him an edge in winning his first title since 2001. And, wouldn’t be the perfect ending to a legend’s career?

The Sun’s editorial cartoonist Mike Smith looks back at Gordon’s career through a series of cartoons he has drawn over the years. More than 20 years of Gordon winning races and dominating the headlines gave Smith plenty of material.

Farewell, No. 24. We’ll miss watching you race each March in Las Vegas.
