New road rules take effect in school zones

Crossing Guard, Francisco Esteban, stops traffic allowing children to safely cross the street in front of McCall Elementary School in North Las Vegas Wednesday, June 1, 2011.

Be extra cautious when driving near a school: the law just got stricter.

A new law went into effect Thursday prohibits drivers from making U-turns or passing other motorists in active school zones or school crossing zones. The law stems from a state Senate bill passed earlier this year.

And, yes, that means you can’t pass motorists driving below the speed limit in those active zones, said Erin Breen, director of UNLV’s Vulnerable Road Users Project.

“We’re trying to save kids’ lives,” she said. “If we have a way to get cars to slow down and pay more attention, that’s a good thing.”

So far this year, 31 pedestrians have died on Clark County roadways.

The Vulnerable Road Users Project will be conducting a pedestrian enforcement event Tuesday ahead of International Walk to School Day, which is Wednesday. Law enforcement plan to gather along Maryland Parkway near UNLV and remind all road users — motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians — to follow the rules.
