Gamblers switching sides, backing Cormier big to beat Gustafsson

UFC182 Fight With Jones and Cormier

L.E. Baskow

Light Heavyweight Title fighter Daniel Cormier checks his eye after an accidental poke from Jon Jones during their UFC182 fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Friday, January 2, 2014.

The betting market didn’t like Daniel Cormier to win the light heavyweight championship belt five months ago.

It likes him to keep the gold now, though. Cormier enters the UFC 192 main event Saturday in Houston as a minus-390 (risking $3.90 to win $1) favorite over challenger Alexander Gustafsson, who comes back at plus-290 (risking $1 to win $2.90), and the price is still rising.

Cormier opened as low as 2-to-1 before betting action nearly doubled the line. It feels much different from UFC 187, where Cormier opened as the favorite over Anthony Johnson but saw the odds shift to make him a small underdog ahead of his submission victory. Cormier also saw the bulk of the action go against him at UFC 182 in January when he challenged Jon Jones, who closed a minus-250 favorite before winning via unanimous decision.

The Las Vegas Sun picks panel is unconcerned with the new role. Three of four prognosticators sided with the champion to retain his belt in his first title defense.
