Driver facing DUI case after sidewalk crash kills 1, hurts 1

A 78-year-old man was killed and a 75-year-old man was critically injured after being hit by a car in an apparent DUI crash this morning in the southern valley, according to Metro Police.

The incident happened about 7 a.m. in the 9500 block of South Maryland Parkway, near Roger D. Gehring Elementary School, police said.

Las Vegas resident Nicole Johnson, 30, was headed south on Maryland near Richmar Avenue in a Honda Civic when she drove onto the sidewalk and hit the two pedestrians, police said.

One of the men was pronounced dead on scene, and the other was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, police said.

Maryland Parkway was closed between Richmar and Gary avenues as officers investigated, according to Metro Police.

Johnson failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on multiple counts including one count of DUI resulting in death and one count of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, police said.

Metro investigators were on the scene.
