A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in the beating of a 72-year-old man at a central valley Wal-Mart parking lot last month, according to Metro Police. The elder man later died, police said.

Ramon Smith was booked into the Clark County jail on a count of battery with substantial bodily harm as well as traffic warrants and one count of domestic battery, according to jail records.

Police allege Smith beat James Northcott on Sept. 23 outside the Wal-Mart at 4505 W. Charleston Blvd., near Decatur Boulevard.

Northcott was in a vehicle at the lot about 3 p.m. when he got into a dispute with another driver, police said.

Someone in the other vehicle exited and beat Northcott before leaving the scene, police said.

Northcott returned to a hotel where he was staying and was later taken to Spring Valley Hospital, where he died Sept. 28, police said.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has not yet determined his cause and manner of death, but the outcome could determine if Smith faces additional charges, police said.

Police last week released pictures of two persons of interest in the case. A woman shown in the photos was interviewed and is no longer a person of interest, police said.
