Clark County unemployment down to 6.8 percent in September

CARSON CITY — Unemployment in Clark County fell to 6.8 percent in September, with an estimated 70,800 people jobless, the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today.

That is down from 7 percent in August, when an estimated 73,400 people were out of work in the county.

Department economist Bill Anderson said the state’s economy is continuing to improve.

The Reno-Sparks area had a jobless rate of 5.9 percent last month, down from 6.1 percent in August. Carson’s City’s rate fell to 6.9 percent in September from 7.1 percent the previous month.

Mineral County’s jobless rate was the highest at 10.4 percent and Esmeralda County’s was the lowest at 4.4 percent.

Construction jobs in the Las Vegas area increased to 53,300, up about 1,600 from August. Employment in the leisure and hospitality sector increased by 600 to a total of 290,900, and government employment was 98,100, up 5,100, in Southern Nevada.

The number of jobs in trade, transportation and utilities was down 200 to 162,400 in September. Professional and business services in Clark County grew by 1,000 to a total of 124,700, and manufacturing jobs inched up by 100 in September to 21,300.
