Committee releases $18.2 million for UNLV medical school

CARSON CITY — The Legislative Interim Finance Committee has released $18.2 million to start a medical school at UNLV beginning in August 2017.

Barbara Atkinson, planning dean of the school, briefed lawmakers today on progress of the program.

The first students will have four-year scholarships paid by community groups to take care of tuition. Atkinson foresees an eventual enrollment of 180 students.

Assemblywoman Robin Titus, R-Wellington, said the $18.2 million released is “just a drop in the bucket of what will be needed.”

Titus, a family physician, also said she wanted to see efforts to encourage students to practice medicine in Nevada after they graduate.

Atkinson said there were no restrictions requiring the first students to stay in Nevada. But she left the door open for incentives or rules to keep them in the state.

The 2015 Legislature approved the money but put it in a contingency fund requiring the school to come to the Interim Finance Committee to release $5.8 million this fiscal year and $12.4 million in fiscal 2017.

The committee also released $3.8 million to expand the medical school at UNR.
