Desert Pines football players Trevor Nofoa, Nathaniel Tavita, Marckell Grayson, Natron Auelua-Naki, Sam Poutasi, Vasa Hansell, Angel Torres, Isaiah Morris, Termaine Javea, and Anthony Smith before the 2015 Season.

Desert Pines fielded a ton of players in a 48-0 blowout victory over Sunrise Mountain Friday night.

Sam Poutasi was not one of them. The highly touted senior offensive lineman’s return from an ACL tear will have to wait another week.

“The doctor said he was 100 percent and gave him clearance to play, but we decided it was better to give him some more practice and really evaluate him,” Desert Pines coach Tico Rodriguez said. “We don’t want to put him in a bad situation.”

The Jaguars fared fine without Poutasi against the Miners. Junior running back Isaiah Morris went over 200 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.

Senior running back Trevor Nofoa had more than 100 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Junior quarterback Marckell Grayson went over 200 passing yards with two touchdowns. Grayson connected with Randal Grimes and Amari Tatum three times each for more than 130 combined yards.

On defense, Desert Pines gave up less than 50 total yards and only four first downs. The Jaguars travel to Cheyenne for the first round of the playoffs next week.

“Our kids are looking forward to the challenge,” Rodriguez said. “Cheyenne is a great team. We know we have a tough road with the situation with the forfeits, but we’re ready for it.”
