letters to the editor:

Lawmakers, heed call for compromise

Pope Francis covered a lot of territory in his speech before Congress, but perhaps none more important than the message he left when he said, ”The challenges facing us today call for a renewal of the spirit and cooperation which has accomplished so much good throughout the history of the United States.” Congress has been a miserable failure since it abandoned that spirit and cooperation.

Compromise is no longer part of any discussion of policy. The pope was right when he identified spirit and cooperation as the reasons for the greatness of our country.

There is still time to recapture that spirit and reintroduce compromise to politics.
