Henderson doctor pleads guilty in drug distribution case

A suspended Henderson doctor pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Monday to one count of distribution of a controlled substance, according to U.S. Attorney for Nevada Daniel G. Bogden.

Mahesh Reddy Kuthuru, 47, was indicted in October 2014 on nine counts of distributing substances including Oxycodone and Percocet without a legitimate medical purpose, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors accused Kuthuru of writing prescriptions to undercover officers between July 6, 2012, and Nov. 15, 2012, with little to no physical assessment of their need for the drugs, according to a news release from Bogden’s office.

He also “failed to refer the patient to a specialist, physical therapist or other for further diagnosis,” according to the release.

Kuthuru, who operated Kuthuru Desert Pain Management at 4550 E. Charleston Blvd., near Lamb Boulevard, also worked in the state of New York, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

His medical license was suspended indefinitely by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners, and he surrendered his license in New York.

“We will continue to identify and prosecute bad doctors who are using their medical licenses to illegally deal drugs,” Bogden said in the release. “Overprescribing and falsely prescribing with no medical need leads to more abuse and more overdose deaths.”

Kuthuru is expected to be sentenced about 11 a.m. Dec. 21 before Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum $1 million fine.
