Man killed in head-on crash on 215 Beltway

Fatal crash

A man was killed and one person seriously injured today when a car crossed the median and slammed head-on into another vehicle on the 215 Beltway near Aliante Parkway, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

A Chevrolet Impala was headed west on the beltway about 1:45 a.m. when it ran onto the median, hit some sand-filled construction barrels and crossed into the eastbound lanes, Trooper Chelsea Stuenkel said.

The Impala crashed head-on into a Jeep and caught fire after being struck by a third vehicle, she said. Troopers are investigating what caused the Impala to cross into the opposite lanes, Stuenkel said.

The driver of the Impala was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released, pending notification of family.

A passenger in the Jeep was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries and the driver, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on a count of driving under the influence, Stuenkel said. The Jeep driver was not at fault in the crash, she said.

The driver of the third vehicle was not injured, she said.

A secondary crash occurred a few minutes later when a motorist slowed or stopped to render aid and was hit from behind, Stuenkel said. Nobody was injured.

The eastbound lanes of the beltway were closed in the area until about 7 a.m.
