Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval dedicates a tree on the Capitol grounds during an exhibit celebrating Nevada’s 150th birthday in Carson City, Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015.

With several deer lounging on the lawn in front of the Capitol, Gov. Brian Sandoval planted an incense cedar tree on the grounds to mark the end of Nevada’s 150th birthday celebration.

More than $2 million in donations paid for about 500 sesquicentennial events during the year, which kicked off Oct. 31, 2014, and close to 150 restoration projects started.

A crowd of about 150 people attended the tree planting and then gathered in the old Assembly chambers in the Capitol to hear about the many accomplishments and to view the artifacts.

Sandoval said the tree, which is marked with a bronze plaque noting the state's sesquicentennial, could grow to be 130 to 200 feet tall and live for 500 years.

During the year, more than 17,000 sesquicentennial license plates were sold.

Bud Hicks, chairman of the 150 Nevada Foundation, said there is still some money from the more than $2 million collected.

Sandoval called this a “bittersweet moment” but added it was a time to look back on the accomplishments.
