East valley house fire blamed on unattended candle

Updated Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 | 6:24 p.m.

An unattended candle caused a fire at a one-story house in the east valley today, leading to $75,000 damage and displacing two people, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

A passer-by called 911 about 3:45 p.m. to report smoke coming from the house, located in the 200 block of Carlin Avenue, near Stewart Avenue and Marion Drive, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The couple who live in the house told police the adult female occupant left for work, and the man went to sleep, leaving the candle unattended in a bedroom, Szymanski said.

The man was woken up by a smoke alarm, and he was able to escape, he said.

Crews who arrived on scene saw a column of smoke in the air and flames coming from the house, and they were able to get the situation under control in about 10 minutes, he said.

The fire was confined to the home, and no injuries were reported to the occupants or firefighters, he said.

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada was called to the scene to help the couple, who were displaced by the fire, Szymanski said.

Szymanski said the fire department strongly suggests people use LED candles instead of real candles to prevent house fires.
