Hysterical woman shows up at school, prompts lockdown

Updated Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 | 4:56 p.m.

A high school was temporarily locked down today after a hysterical woman, apparently the victim of a crime and possibly carrying a hammer, showed up at the building, according to Clark County School District and Metro police.

Metro Police received a report about 11:30 a.m. of a woman knocking on the door of a home in the 6600 block of Painted Morning Avenue, across from the East Career and Technical Academy, 6705 Vegas Valley Drive, Officer Jesse Roybal said.

The woman said she was seeking help and ran to the school, Roybal said. Police received information that she might have had a hammer, he said.

Video taken by students shows the woman, who was not wearing pants, being removed from the school and away from a crowd of students by two men.

The video also shows a hole and cracks in a window following the incident.

Jonna White, 16, said her lunch period was about to end when she noticed the woman on the stage in the school's quad yelling.

White said she didn't hear what the woman was screaming but didn't move closer because the woman had a weapon.

"I didn't know what she was holding, so I was kind of scared," she said.

The incident was over quickly thanks to the intervention of the two men, White said.

She identified the men as school employees.

"If they weren't there, it probably would have lasted a lot longer," she said.

School District Police Capt. Ken Young said the 20-year-old woman was the victim of a crime and was hysterical.

The school was locked down from about noon to 1 p.m., officials said.

Metro Police are investigating.
