Metro Police officer involved in shooting identified

The officer involved in a Sept. 4 shooting in the central valley that left another officer with a gunshot wound to the leg has been identified as 35-year-old Malik Grego-Smith.

According to Metro Police:

Grego-Smith, who has been employed with the department since 2008, and Officer Jeremy Robertson, 37, had opened the back door to a home in the 6700 block of Oveja Circle while responding to a prowler call when they were fired upon.

Robertson was shot in the upper leg with what was thought to be an AK-47.

Grego-Smith returned fire, striking Steven Turner, 24, in the calf, then releasing a police dog that bit Clemon Hudson, 20, on the head and hands.

Robertson was taken to University Medical Center in stable condition and underwent surgery.

Turner and Hudson were taken to UMC before being taken to the Clark County Detention Center.

They were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, conspiracy to commit murder and burglary with a firearm, among other counts. Police think a third suspect might have left the scene in a white Nissan Maxima.

Grego-Smith, who is assigned to the Northwest Area Command’s Community Policing Division, has been placed on routine paid administrative leave as the incident is reviewed.
