Lobbying — and ‘Las Vegas Night’ — on tap as chamber group visits Capitol Hill

A delegation from the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce is making the rounds in Washington this week, discussing legislative priorities with members of Nevada’s delegation and knocking on doors of other lawmakers.

The overarching purpose of the visit is to develop relationships with members of Congress and their staffs to promote shared interests, said Cara Clarke, the chamber’s communications director. Among topics to be discussed are education, infrastructure and the Interstate 11 project, drought mitigation, homeland security, international tourism and immigration and tort reform.

The visit also will include meetings with policy experts at the Brookings Institution, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and The Education Fund.

The group — more than 40 strong and including business and community leaders outside the chamber — also has one other event on its calendar: hosting a Capitol Hill reception Wednesday night called, simply and straight-to-the-point, “Las Vegas Night.”

“It’s a great way to not just show good ol’ Vegas hospitality but to build relationships and connections in a fun way,” Clark said. “It’s something we haven’t done before.”

The early-evening offerings include live music, table games, food and drinks, including the reception’s signature libation: Citron vodka, white cranberry juice and blue Curacao.
