2 inmates hurt in High Desert prison fight; 3rd treated

Two inmates were taken to the hospital and one was treated by prison staffers Friday evening after a fight broke out at the High Desert State Prison.

Two inmates began fighting about 7 p.m. in the general population yard as they were returning from dinner, the Nevada Department of Corrections said in a news release.

Also according to the department:

A gun post officer fired a blank popper round after the inmates ignored officers’ commands to stop fighting.

An officer continued to command them to stop, and a “rubber round” was skipped into the fighting inmates, which stopped the scuffle.

The fighting resumed after a third inmate attacked one of the other two inmates.

The inmates continued to fight until more live rounds were skipped into the fight. Staffers then separated the inmates.

Two inmates were taken to a hospital by ambulance, with one returning to the prison later in the evening. Another inmate remained at the hospital for observation.

The third inmate was treated by prison medical staffers and returned to his cell.

None of the inmates’ injuries was life-threatening.

The unit housing the inmates will remain on lockdown until Monday, but the general population yard was taken off lockdown about 9 p.m. Friday.

Visitation at the prison will not be affected.

The incident remains under investigation.
