Updated Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 | 8:48 p.m.

A man is dead and two other people were seriously injured after a sport utility vehicle crashed into a support column at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday, Metro Police reported.

The accident occurred just before 10 p.m., when a 2001 Lincoln Navigator with three occupants traveling east at a high speed in the westbound lanes of Convention Center Drive, just east of Paradise Road, veered onto the sidewalk near the south doors and hit a large support column, the release said.

The 21-year-old driver, 21-year-old front-seat passenger and 58-year-old backseat passenger were all taken to Sunrise Trauma Center.

The driver and front-seat passenger suffered serious injuries, and the backseat passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the release.

The front-seat passenger reported that the driver was involved in a "road rage"-type incident moments before the crash, the release said.

This is the 72nd traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.

The accident and the reported road-rage incident are under investigation.
