Freeway to be named for slain Nevada deputy

CARSON CITY — The state Transportation Board agreed today to name the Carson City freeway after Deputy Sheriff Carl Howell, who was shot to death last month answering a domestic violence call.

State Transportation Director Rudy Malfabon said signs could be ready in about a month to be posted on the highway.

Howell was killed by Jonathon Pope when he responded to a domestic violence call in east Carson City in August. Pope was killed by Howell.

There has been an outpouring of support for the freeway dedication after an editorial in the Nevada Appeal newspaper.
