Middle school locked down after nearby shooting

Updated Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 | 3:22 p.m.

A Las Vegas middle school was locked down today after a nearby shooting that apparently involved two vehicles, according to Clark County School District and Metro police.

Harold J. Brinley Middle School, 2480 Maverick St., was locked down after police received multiple calls about 10:40 a.m. of possible gunshots near West Smoke Ranch Road and North Jones Boulevard, less than a half mile from the school, Metro Police Officer Laura Meltzer said.

Two vehicles were headed down the street when one crashed into a pole, she said.

Police found bullet holes in the crashed car, and the driver, whose age and gender were not available, appeared to have suffered at least one gunshot wound, Meltzer said.

The driver was taken to University Medical Center with what appeared to be serious injuries, she said.

The other vehicle, which may have been involved in the shooting, was described only as a dark SUV, she said.

Smoke Ranch will be closed for hours between Maverick and Jones as police investigate, according to Metro Police.

The school was locked down as a precaution, and students were dismissed about their regular time of 2:20 p.m., School District Police Capt. Ken Young said.
