Two more in Clark County sickened in salmonella outbreak

A multistate salmonella outbreak potentially linked to cucumbers imported from Mexico has sickened two more people in Clark County, bringing the total to six in the county and nine statewide, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating the outbreak of the salmonella poona strain, which has affected 418 people in 31 states, officials said.

The CDC reports two people have died and 91 others have been hospitalized in relation to the outbreak.

Because of possible contamination, Andrews and Williamson Fresh Produce — the distributor of the imported cucumbers — voluntarily recalled all cucumbers sold under its Limited Edition label from Aug. 1 through Sept. 3.

On Friday, Custom Produce Sales voluntarily recalled all cucumbers sold under the Fat Boy label beginning Aug. 1. This recall includes unlabeled cucumbers packed in black reusable plastic containers and sold in Nevada since Aug. 1. Andrews and Williamson Fresh Produce sent these cucumbers to Custom Produce Sales.

Consumers should not eat the recalled cucumbers, and food retailers should throw out the product, officials said.

If there’s any uncertainty about whether the product is part of the recall, the Health District advises getting rid of the cucumbers as a precaution.
