Scooter driver dies after crash in western valley

A 34-year-old man is dead after a scooter collided with a car in the western part of the valley Saturday evening, according to Metro Police.

Also according to police:

A 2011 JMSTAR scooter was traveling east in the right travel lane of Charleston Boulevard, approaching Windermere Drive, around 6:14 p.m.

A 2002 Honda Civic was traveling west on Charleston Boulevard in the left turn lane at the intersection of Windermere Drive when it turned left toward the entrance of the Camden del Mar Apartments and entered the scooter's path.

The rider of the scooter tried to avoid the Honda, which caused the scooter to fall onto its right side. The front of the scooter then struck the right side of the Honda.

The rider was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries, from which he later died.

The driver of the Honda stayed at the scene and was not suspected of driving impaired.

This incident is the 75th traffic-related fatality in Metro Police's jurisdiction this year.

The incident remains under investigation.
