Supreme Court rejects petition in 20-year-old murder case

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has rejected the petition of death row inmate Antonio L. Doyle, convicted of kidnapping, raping and strangling a woman to death in Las Vegas more than 20 years ago.

Doyle maintains he is innocent of first-degree murder.

He was convicted in 1995 of abducting, choking, raping and stomping Ebony Mason to death and leaving her body in the desert. The charge of sexual assault was previously thrown out by the Supreme Court.

The court, in a 4-2 decision today, ruled that Doyle’s petition was untimely, being filed 12 years after his first appeal was denied.

The majority of the court upheld the decision of District Court, which declined to hear more evidence.

The court rejected Doyle’s arguments, including that blacks were excluded from the jury. The court said Doyle failed to support any of his allegations.

Justices Michael Cherry and Nancy Saitta dissented, saying Doyle had good cause for raising the race issue in his second petition for a writ of habeas corpus.
