MountainView Hospital announced today accreditation of an internal medicine residency program — another step forward in the region’s drive to produce and keep more doctors here.

The first batch of residents will begin in July at MountainView Hospital, officials said.

Interviews with applicants from around the country will start in October, and the graduate medical education (GME) program expects to select 20 first-year and 20 second-year medical residents. The University of Nevada School of Medicine is MountainView's academic medical partner in the residency program.

Residency is the final phase of an aspiring physician’s education to practice medicine and often influences where a doctor will practice.

The GME residency program for internal medicine lasts three years, during which time the residents are trained in the specialty.

“This is a significant step forward in the development of medical education in the Las Vegas Valley,” Chris Mowan, MountainView’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. “With the establishment of MountainView’s Graduate Medical Education Department, it allows medical students more options for their residency, with the goal of growing the base of physicians in Nevada to serve our community.”

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education evaluated and approved MountainView’s program for accreditation.

“Our vision is to offer an exceptional training environment that prepares residents to practice quality internal medicine using a high standard of clinical medicine,” said Dr. Ali Rahimi, director of the internal medicine residency program.
